let’s start wrapping things up! April 28, 2010

so FE is almost over! next week is our last week:( im gonna miss it! i have gotten so close to my students and my FE teacher! forreal.. i feel like i’m actually their real teacher! all the students ask for my help and call me Miss Alexis! it makes me feel so loved:) and im gonna miss all of them and there littleness…if that’s a word! lol

so this week the students did alot with math while i was there. they are learning how to work with money and calculators. it’s so weird to teach someone how to use a calculator. to us they are so simple but to my second graders they are the hardest things to figure out! it’s so cute:) and they also are doing “Readers’s Theater,” which is liek a play from a book. at the end of the year parents are allowed to come to school for the day with their children and they plan a whole day for the parents and the students are going to perform their Reader’s Theater to their parents! which is really exciting for them! they are so excited and can’t wait! one group is doing the tortoise and the hare and anotehr group is doing the rough- faced girl. rough- faced girl is about this village that has a person living there known as the invisible one. the invisible one can only be seen by his sister, and he is trying to find his perfect wife! all the girls in the village have to try and take a test to pass and become his wife. and rough- faced girl passes the test. they call her rough- faced girl because she has bad scars from a fire. it is such a cute story and all the students love it!

but i really am beginning to feel my teacher heart grow! i really am a teacher….i check homework, grade tests, teach lessons, read to them, take care of them! i’m really gonna miss it so much! i mean i am looking forward to coming back to TC class and seeing our family but my FE class has also become my family and i love every moment of it!

getting back into the groove of things… April 17, 2010

so spring break is over:/ but good news only 4 weeks of school left!!!!

in FE this week i was sick on monday so i didn’t go to school that day:/ which was kind of depressing because i missed my class! on wed. the students started learning about fairytales and they read the little red hen. they also had a math lesson on money and prices. they also got to work and practice with calculators which i helped them a lot because they have no idea how to use them!:) its so cute! on friday i got to give another lesson… i read a fairytale to the class and did a fairytale wed chart. the chart has the following: the setting, the characters-which are normally good vs. evil, the problems, the solution-“happy ending”, and the lesson learned from the story. i read Rumpelstiltskin which the class loved! and the good thing was not many of them had read it.

i love FE so much and i am really to have a strong relationship with my FE teacher and students! Mrs. Cooke is very interested in my future plans for college and life and she’s always asking how school and dance and life is going! and all my students are so sweet and i have made some real connections with some of them! this week i feel like i have been connecting with one student in particular, Deron. he has read one on one with me this week and i feel like for some reason he always wants my attention and maybe its because he is taking advantage of having 2 teachers in class with him or what but he is really starting to shine almost! he is always asking me for help and wanting to read with me and to me it shows his eagerness to work and show others his work!

i can’t believe we only have a few weeks left of FE:/ im excited because it means school is almost over but im sad because i know im gonna have to leave all of this…high school…some of my friends…teachers…graduation is going to be so exciting! but im happy and terrified all at the same time! this is the beginning of the rest of our lives!

senior service day!!! March 29, 2010

Filed under: Uncategorized — Alexis Wilkinson @ 1:00 am

instead of going to senior service day we got spend the whole day at FE!!! it was such a great experience! i really got to experience being a teacher for the whole day… it was so fun and exhausting all at the same time! i also was really able to bond with my FE teacher.

this week i also taught my first real lesson! the kids are learning about capacity (gallons, quarts, pints, and cups) in math so Mrs. Cooke and i thought it would be a good idea for me to teach a lesson on that! we made the gallon people…aka “Gloria Gallon!” the kids really loved the activity because they got to color and cut and paste and all little kids love that! they also really retained the information i actually taught them! i felt like i did a succesful job at teaching the intended lesson! i also made them brownies as a treat! they were really excited about that…but before we ate them we discussed the ingredients in them and the measurements used to make them (mainly cups) so they were able to put the lesson into a real life situation!

also this week Mrs. Cooke found a picture of me in an old yearbook from River Springs! it was so weird! lol…also all of the teachers around Mrs. Cooke’s room remember me from when i went there which is really awesome! all the teachers there are really awesome! they really see going far with teaching and nursing! they say i have a natural act with kids and i have a great personality and get along well with everybody! that makes me feel really confident as a teacher!

since doing FE my teacher heart as truly grown! in being there not even a month i love all my students and we all have a great relationship as a class! teaching these kids and being with Mrs. Cooke has really had a huge impact on my future! i really think teaching is something i want to do! i am going to be sooo sad when FE is over:( TC and FE have boht impacted my life so much and i think had made me a better more understanding person!

my story this week has to do with a student in my class, Damian! Damian is so smart! He has the highest test scores in his class, but he misbehaves sooo much! and it’s because he’s never with his mom…he’s always with neighbors or other relatives who take care of him because his mom is always working to care for his siblings as well as there new baby on the way! Damian’s real father isn’t at home and it just breaks my heart!!! He is so smart, but his social skills are so poor now wants to be friends with him and he acts for attention. i have the strongest relationship with Damian because i know what he’s capable of and he is a very special student!

PASS testing. March 18, 2010

favorite song of the week! Forever and Almost Always by Kate Voegele…i’ve really been feeling this song lately and i thought i’d share it with u…go listen to it!

“So you’ll be my Forever and Almost Always,
And I’ll be fine, just love me when you can
And I’ll wait patiently, I’ll wake up everyday
Just hoping that, you still care”

on tuesday the schools were having PASS testing so we weren’t allowed to go to FE..which made me kinda sad because i missed my students! but it was great getting to go back to TC class and see everybody! i’ve missed our family so much! it was great to be in class because we got to go over what our portfolio was supposed to be like and i had no clue what the portfolio was, but now it’s all cleared up! we also got to share stories from FE with the class. i LOVED Jud’s story about the little boy and his girlfriend! when the little boy was like “my girlfriend is on her period!!!” haha lol and it made it sooo much funnier because they are 4th graders. also Mrs. J gave us a read aloud! i love being read to and i missed it so much! i’ve been reading out loud to my students during FE, but it’s nice to have someone read to you every now and then. Mrs. J read “Once Upon an Ordinary School Day” by Colin McNaughton. it was so cute! the book started off in shades of grey and brown… very boring ordinary colors. and when the little boy in the story went to school, color began to show when the teacher walked in the room! the teacher put on music and asked the children to imagien what the sound is and write a story about it. the little boy wrote about elephants! then the whole book turned into color! the color represented the teacher bringing out the imagination and creativity in his students.

in FE this week my class was doing math. they did area and perimeter of shapes. for their experiment i made 2 cylinder shapes out of paper, one tall and narrow and the other short and wide. the students then filled each cylinder with macaroni to determine which held the most. the kids were really into the experiment because they were able to use their hands and get up and actually move around and interact with their peers. Mrs. C is just the best CT ever! she is great and she has really helped me adapt well to FE. she says i’m doing very well with the children!

no stories this week:( but i do just want to say that FE is really making me consider teaching as a career. as you may know i got accepted into USC’s college of nursing but being in FE with Mrs. C and our students i really am starting to love teaching more and more everyday! i really want to build strong relationships with my students and CT and by doing so i hope that will help me make my decision. oh and Mrs. C is soo excited about her shirt! she can’t wait!

i actually did something! March 14, 2010

qoute for tshirts “Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind.” – Dr. Suess

FE is this week was so better now that i feel comfortable and relaxed in my classroom. my class really knows me now and they aren’t afraid to ask me for help and it really makes me feel like a teacher. so this week i got to lead a reading group. me and a few students read a book and then we had discussion questions to answer and they really understood the book. i also made a “ME” box. i brought in a box filled wgrith stuff about me. i brought in dance shoes, my pageant crown, a book, jewelry, etc. and then i read the book that Sarah G. read out loud in class “Enemy Pie!” they loved it sooo much! and they were such a good group to read to.

so this week in class the kids have been continuing their study on non- fiction. they also have been doing math fractions. Mrs. Cooke has really been  letting work with the kids and giving me alot of hands on action with them! she says i’m adapting real well to them and i’m really acting like a teacher. so my story for the week is how awesome the adult bathrooms are at RSES! they’re so pretty and they smell good and they are clean! they have like lotion and hairspray and everything in there and even like a shelf for book sharing! its so cool!

FE:) March 8, 2010

field experience is sooo awesome! i love it! Mrs. Cooke is so sweet and she’s really cool! on my first day i got there about 10 minutes early to talk with Mrs. Cooke and give her all the info she needs for FE. when i got there i had my own desk! it was so cute! it had a star next to it that said Miss Alexis and i had flowers and school supplies and a welcome card! it was so thoughtful and made me feel comfortable right away! the class prepared for my arrival and they already know me and they were just so cute! also i’ve noticed that kids love to learn about anything and everything! in class they were reading an article on the Olympic snowboarder, Shaun White, and the kids flipped out because they were sooo excited! also kids love to be read to and also love to read themselves!

this week i just really observed and watched how the class worked. they have been starting a new unit on non-fiction so they have been reading alot of non-fiction  biographies. in the morning Mrs. Cooke would take role and have the students write in their journals and read. i got to help check their homework and read with them. when they individual reading time i went around and they read to me and i helped them with their work. we also had a fire and tornado drill this week which was actually a really good learning experience. it showed me how to really take control and control the students under something so stressful and paniced.

in FE so far i have had to apply learning barriers from TC class. there is a student in my FE class and he thinks he’s a dinosaur. he is sooo sweet and such a good reader but him thinking he’s a dinosaur gets in the way. Mrs. Cooke told me it was worse at the beginning of the year but now it’s getting better and it’s been a little bit of a challenge teaching him when he’s literally in his own world.

ok so i have a super cute story to tell. there’s a little boy in my FE class who has a crush on me:] it’s sooo cute! i walked in thursday morning and he was like good morning Miss Alexis and i said good morning back and then he turned to another student and was she likes me she rememered my name! it was adorbale!!!

“The object of education is to prepare the young to educate themselves throughout their lives.” ~Robert Maynard Hutchins

so this week in class me and emily did our FLAY model lessons! we taught spanish and animals. we brought in stuffed animals and had the students label them. we thought the stuffed animals would be better than pictures because they are more fun and better to look at and plus the students could hold and play with them and have hands- on learning.

“Approaches to Alternative Teachers Compensation”

this article is talking about teachers salaries and how some teachers work better if they’re paid better. they talk about the three ways teachers are paid…uniform salary, performance- based, outcome- based.

my birthday is on friday and im soo excited:] im gonna go out with a bunch of friends and have soo much fun! because turning 18 is a big deal:] my dad already got me this really pretty ring with my birthstone in it!
